The Vanuatu house
Location: Port Villa, Vanuatu
Year of project: 2011
This Pacific Island house sits on the coast and is built as a series of three separated pavilions. The element of water was a vital component in the concept design for this building. The enclosed courtyard houses a pool which separates the point of arrival and garaging from the house; this can be crossed via stepping stones or circumnavigated beneath canopies around the perimeter. The pool then funnels beneath the building’s glass pass-through to arrive at the coastal front of the building.
The hot local environment dictated the building’s repeated gabled structure allowing for air to naturally ventilate the three open spaces. Louvered screens provide further respite from piercing sun.
