Zindels lawers offices New street Nelson
Location: New Street Nelson
Year of project: 2017-18
The brief was to design an extension to a heritage listed building (ca.1880) to accommodate the clients growing legal practice. The original building is built in the “carpenter gothic style” as a family home, this has a stark geometry which is both tall and narrow and orientates towards the south. The buildings steep pitch line is framed by an ornate scrolling filigree.
It was important to us that we retain the unique character of the original while fulfilling the brief to expand the buildings footprint. We opted to use the same tall narrow form but use a material language for the addition that is contrastingly modern and minimal. A glass corridor acts as a transitional space between the old and the new. The new section is constructed with concrete tilt slab and industrial metal cladding. Extensive glazing allows natural light to penetrate from the north as well as frame selected views of the Nelson landscape from the second story.
